Alex the African Grey Parrot

When animal psychologist Irene Pepperberg entered a Northwest Side pet shop in 1977 and Alex The African Grey Parrot purchased a haughty one-year-old african grey parrot care grey parrot named Alex, she began a 30-year research project that changed the way we view the intelligence of birds. For instance, if he heard the word "grape" he would recognize that it was a fruit and not an vegetable. Dr. Pepperberg taught Alex words in a way that helped him comprehend them. She and a colleague would role-play the roles of teacher and student. Alex observed and listened. When he heard the correct pronunciation and definition of the word, he was rewarded with the object associated with it.

She also taught Alex the meaning of words, rather than just the sounds. This was a novel approach, since pet parrots usually only learn words for their novelty. When pet owners speak an idiom but they don't actually mean what they are saying. However with Alex who spoke a certain word, he truly meant what he was saying.

Many people are enthralled by the fact that Alex was able to learn so many things, some scientists have argued that it was unfair to compare Alex with humans in terms of intelligence. They have argued that although Alex was able to communicate but he didn't have the ability to comprehend logic-based expressions such as "if x, then y."

Although this is still controversial but the fact remains that Alex set the foundation for research into the animal mind and consciousness. Until his death in 2007 at 31 years of age, he was among the most famous talking parrots of all time.

What was Alex's personality?

Alex was a violent member of a gang who enjoyed brutal acts. Despite his violent tendencies Alex was a likable character, and seemed to relish the power that he wielded over his fellow hoodlums. He was addicted to violence and classical music. Beethoven's music particularly, brought up images of depravity and blood for him. The gang would drink milk that was laced with drugs in order to prepare themselves for "ultraviolence."

Alex's experience as a parrot in a pet shop was not remarkable but it was a great experience for him. Alex was quick to master concepts and words from his human trainer, Irene Pepperberg. Her research over thirty years on him revolutionized the theories of animal cognition and communication. She acknowledges Alex for teaching her how to use the model that worked for other animals and children who had learning disabilities.

Dr. Pepperberg continued her research with other parrots and parrots, including Wart and Griffin. She is currently a professor at the University of Washington, where she continues her pioneering work with birds.

Alex is the tiniest member of the group and the most playful. She is a little kind of a tomboy, and has been described as extremely teasing. She is the most animal-friendly member of the group. She is often the peacemaker when Clover and Sam engage in a petty argument (such as "Abductions")

She also has an Emo/Goth-like personality and is fond of wearing black clothing and writing poetry about love and loss ("Boy Bands Will Be Boy Bands"). The show's creators have said that Seth MacFarlane's track is her most favorite and that she dated him.

What was Alex's intelligence like?

He was able to utilize his more than 100-word vocabulary to describe ask and deny objects as well as describe the sizes and types of materials. He was able comprehend analogies and recognize written words, but did not seem capable of connecting them to their spoken form.

He was also capable of counting up to six sets of objects and demonstrated math skills that were quite advanced at the time for a bird.

He also was able to communicate with other animals using a sign language, and had a good grasp of grammar. He used a training method called "rival model" which included two trainers who showed the bird what they were trying to teach it. The trainers would change positions often so that the bird was able to interact with them both and receive rewards and attention from each of them.

Alex was named a National Hero in 2014 by President Barack Obama after the success of Free Solo. Alex was able to accomplish many things throughout his life because of his strength of character and determination to live his life to the fullest.
