Alex the African Grey Parrot

Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, purchased Alex in 1977 from a pet shop in the Northwest Side. She began a 30-year study that would change our perception of avian intelligence. He also understood the meaning behind words, a feat which was uncommon for birds. For example, when he heard the word "grape" he would know that it was a fruit and not a vegetable. This was due to the method that Dr. Pepperberg taught him words. She and a colleague would role-play as student and teacher and Alex observed the actions and was attentive to the explanations. When he heard the correct pronunciation and meaning of the word, he was rewarded with the object that was associated with it.
