Evolution Korea

South Korea's democracy is prone to populist tendencies. It is still healthier than was expected.

The country is looking for a new way of developing. A Confucian culture that values respect for the ancestors and gendered family relationships continues to influence society. There are signs of a secularist cultural trend forming.

Origins

In prehistoric times the ancestors of modern Koreans were able to survive by hunting and gathering wild food. Around 10,000 years ago, they began to cultivate millet, beans, and other crops. They also raised livestock and also made furs. They also established tribal states one after another in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also created an industry of metalworking, making bronze tools and later iron tools. Onjo Prince Onjo, a prince from Goguryeo who was also the son of Jumong who was the founder of Goguryeo established the state of Baekje at the end of the time. The new kingdom expanded its territory to the southwest of the peninsula and fought with Goguryeo and China's commandos in the region. Baekje introduced elements of Confucian beliefs into its official belief system and made the male-centric filiopiety concept an official doctrine in 1390 CE. Eastern Buyeo as well as the Gaya confederacy, flourished for a time.

The Unified Silla Kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to cooperate to expand their territories. Silla with the help of the Chinese, eventually conquered and unified the peninsula in 935.

As Korea enters a post-crisis phase the way it develops appears to be in flux. Those who are horrified by the cost of the old system support a comprehensive program of liberalization of capital, labor and markets for products. On the other hand the supporters of the old system try to keep it alive through nationalist sentiments and by inflating fears about potential job losses.

The academic and policy analysts remain sharply divided on the extent to which these two trends are driving Koreas shift towards a new model of economic governance. This article focuses on the five phases of Korea's evolution in terms of its political development that include democratic democracies that are not liberal (1945-60), democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877), democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and democratic participation (2002). This article also highlights the most important factors that are shaping these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26% of the population is Christian. Creationists have had success in promoting their views among this group. A 2009 survey showed that nearly one-third of respondents were against evolution. Of those, 41% claimed that there wasn't enough evidence from science to support the theory 39% of respondents said that the theory was in contradiction to their religious beliefs and 17% claimed it was difficult to grasp. This level of disbelief is similar to that of the United States where a similar percentage of people do not believe that humans evolved from lesser advanced species of life.

In the past, the anti-evolutionist campaign in Korea was primarily focused on teaching students and the introduction of Christ to them. In 1980 an all-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the featured speakers. This event attracted a huge number of pastors, professors, church leaders, and scientists.

KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter, CREATION, where it reported on its activities and published articles about the scientific evidence supporting creationism.
