Evolution Korea

South Korea's democratic system is vulnerable to populist inclinations. It's still better than we had hoped for.

The country is seeking an entirely new model of development. The Confucian culture, which emphasizes respect for ancestors as well as gendered family relationships, continues to influence the society. But there are signs that a secular culture is beginning to emerge.

Origins

Evolution in Korea

The Korean peninsula has been habitable since Neolithic times and early evidence for human settlements is evident in the form of graves lined with stone, with precious objects like amazonite jewelry being buried alongside the dead. In the first half of the 1st millennium BCE, Gojoseon established itself as the first recognized political state. As Korea is entering the post-crisis phase the development paradigm of the country appears to be changing. People who are shocked by the huge costs of the old systems support a comprehensive program of liberalization of labor, capital and markets for products. On the other hand, people who support the old system attempt to keep it alive through nationalist sentiments, as well as by stoking fears of job losses.

Academics and analysts are divided about the extent to which Korea's growth is influenced by these two trends. This article focuses on the five phases of Korea's evolution in terms of its political development: democratically illiberal democracies (1945-60), democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877), democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and participatory democracy (2002). This article also identifies some significant factors that may be influencing these developments.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26% of the population is Christian. Creationists have had success in promoting their views among this group. A survey in 2009 revealed that almost a third of respondents did not believe in evolution. Of those, 41% claimed that there was not enough evidence from science to support the theory; 39% said the theory did not align with their beliefs; and 17% said it was difficult to comprehend. This level of disbelief is similar to the United States where a similar number do not believe that humans evolved from earlier species of life.

In the past, the anti-evolutionist campaign in Korea was primarily focused on the education of students and bringing Christ to them.
