WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boost in specific statistics. Each upgrade increases the level of an item by +3. A random substat is also increased with each upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more useful, unless the item has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a high variance in stats (like the eth Titan weapons). The latter see less value from upgrading due to the requirement to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by giving the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied on any kind of armor or weapons. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader at least once every couple of weeks to ensure that your equipment is up to date.

Upgrades will cost more, based on the level of the item level upgrade [Google explained in a blog post], however they'll always be cheaper than purchasing new equipment. For example upgrading a chest piece from Benthic to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points, purchasing a similar piece from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to purchase weapons, armor, tools, and accessory upgrades. They are purchased by players from NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for different currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor. The button will display the preview of an item's next upgrade level when there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs differ based on the slot of the item and the current level of the item. For example weapons cost more than bracers, or gloves. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones and a number of crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of Flightstones or the crests used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain degree it can be re-downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower price.

Upgraders for items can be found at many locations including the main island as well as some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon and a possibility of obtaining a new recipe. The upgrade discount increases depending on the amount of items that are being upgraded, and can be increased by requiring players to complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Contrary to Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no upgrader for items at the beginning of Icewind Dale. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are only available through a variety of methods. This is both a benefit as well as a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade items system has been altered a bit, with numerous new features added. Once an upgrade has been completed to a certain level of item for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same item upgrader kit level, will cost less. This applies even if the items are from a different set of equipment.

The amount of Valorstones needed to upgrade is reduced and the discount is account-wide. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is also cut and is not available until players reach certain milestones in their achievement.

Crests

Players have several choices when it comes to upgrading their gear in WoW. Flightstones are an option that is accessible to everyone for upgrading. Crests are more specialized and are utilized during specific item level upgrades. Crests are the main component of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1 and are available in four ranks.

The first thing to be aware of is that crests can only be used to purchase equipment of a particular rank, and each rank has different requirements for upgrading. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade is 15 crests. The most complex upgrade requires up to 20 crests, depending on the type of equipment being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by working through content that is of the appropriate level, which means walking around and doing outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, dungeons or raids of all difficulty for items of higher tier or Mythic+ dungeons or heroic raid bosses for gear that is used in the endgame. These crests can then be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC like Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to get the appropriate upgrade pathways and steps.

Utilizing these new currencies isn't that difficult however, the system does introduce some modifications to the upgrade process. For example, once an item is at the highest level of upgrade items for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change lets players upgrade their gear to the highest possible level for all their characters, instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests wisely, as they are only used for one purpose. It is recommended to use your Whelpling-rank crests on the highest-quality gear you can find, and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next round of upgrades. This is especially true for items such as trinkets and rings that fill several slots. The account-wide discount will only be applicable if all slots on the character are filled with high-quality equipment.
