Alex the African Grey Parrot

When animal psychologist Irene Pepperberg entered a Northwest Side pet shop in 1977 and purchased an exuberant one-year-old African grey parrot named Alex She started a 30-year study that altered the way we think about the intelligence of birds. Although this is still a matter of debate however, the fact is that Alex set the stage for studies into animal intelligence and consciousness. Alex was among the world's most famous talking parrots up until his death in 2007, at the age of 31.

He also could communicate with other animals via sign language and had a good understanding of grammar. He employed a method of training called "rival model" which included two trainers who showed the bird what they wanted to teach it. The trainers changed positions often so that the bird could be capable of interacting with them both and receive attention and rewards from each.

Alex was named a National Hero in 2014 by President Barack Obama after the success of Free Solo. Alex was able to accomplish much in his lifetime because of his strength of character, and his determination to live life according to his own terms.
