World of Warcraft Item Upgrade and Set Bonuses

The item upgrade is an enchantment that boosts the base stats of certain weapons or armor. This includes secondary statistics such as Leech and Speed.

Leveling

This method is beneficial for those who want to purchase equipment with a specific level of stats prior to acquiring the new item. The transfer system is user-friendly and lets players avoid wasting upgrades materials.

Upgrade materials can be collected by players as they remove content. They can then be used to upgrade item or replace an item. Each item requires a particular type of upgrade material. Weapons require Destruction Stones while armor requires Guardian or Harmony Leapstones. When an item is upgraded, these materials are renamed. For instance, Stone Fragments becomes Stones and Harmony Shards becomes Life Shards.

Upgrades to items are essential for enhancing the performance of a character however it is crucial to think about the cost of doing so before making any upgrades. Every time an item is upgraded, the upgrade costs an amount of gold which could be better spent on an entirely new piece of equipment. While it's not explained in-universe why the armor sets must be worn together in order to create these effects, they can provide an interesting change of pace when playing the game. The armor sets with Set Bonuses are available in several places throughout Hyrule and include the Dark Moon and Twilight Temple.

Set Bonuses are included with each piece of equipment that is part of the Set. You can identify the ones you are looking for by hovering over the item level upgrade and then looking at the tooltip, near the bottom. The Set Bonuses will appear in an orange box.

Some of these bonuses are exclusive to certain pieces of equipment. For instance, if you have the complete Phantom Armor set you will receive +8 defense (compared to the standard +3 defense included in most gear). The most important thing to keep in mind is that a set bonus's strength will not change when you have an exemplar that is more than three levels below the minimum level allowed for an Enhancement of that type. This rule does not apply to purple (Very rare) Sets, PvP Sets and Archetype Origin Sets. Their set bonuses will function regardless of the exemplar level.
