Evolution Korea

For a long time, the Korean scientific community avoided working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credence. But silence is no anymore an option.

The STR has been campaigning to remove content from textbooks that explain evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. However, this is just one aspect of the development paradigm's evolution.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which can result in variations in genes or entire genomes. These changes can over many generations result in the development of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It explains how individuals who have advantages survive and reproduce more than those with less advantageous traits. This differing reproduction may be a catalyst to the creation and evolution of new species.

The word "evolution" is derived from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing, but the concept itself has a myriad of meanings as it has taken form in the fields of science and in other fields. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into a new species. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the notion that existing species change into different species in a gradual and predictable manner.

Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process through which living organisms develop traits to increase their chances of living or conceiving offspring. Over time this genetic variation can result in the development of completely new biological functions or physical traits in the same population. What is Creationism?

When people think of creationism, they often think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolution movement. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their books. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, the Archeopteryx. The focus is now on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution, too.

STR claims that it has the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its mission, it states, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints a negative view for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of biology students teachers found that about half do not believe in evolution. The reasons aren't certain, but could be related to religion or the absence of creation scientists in the US.

The KACR achieved many things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and an ebook. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences that has an orthodox creationist perspective, which attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught until today.

On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six foreign lecturers, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to an audience of several thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
