Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very good scores in our tests on floors that are bare They're also particularly adept in cleaning pet hair. However, they do have a few flaws that keep them from being our top pick. For one, the Q5's navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance, so it's prone to get caught up in shoes and socks and can't navigate rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. Also, it doesn't have cameras that let it see the corners of a room.

However, it's a good choice for those who want to save money on a Roomba from iRobot, and you have a mostly unfinished home or office. It's also extremely quiet and operates while you're at work or school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on very well and can't deal with dried-on debris. It also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can also clean the floor even after it has vacuumed. This is a feature that we haven't seen on other robot vacuum/mop combination.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

This mop and vacuum combination features a sleek, circular look that looks more like the regular Roomba model than the bulky units of the rivals. It is one of our most attractive robot vacuums. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also among its most advanced. It comes with advanced features, like Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads on its own).

It's also the only robot vacuum or mop that scored an absolute 10 out of 10 in our tests. This is thanks to a mix of high-tech sensors including a structured lighting system, a camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.

The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is easy to use. It comes with a simple mobile application interface and integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the line robot vacuum and mop. It comes with a variety of advanced features that will help you forget your chores. Similar to Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that takes charge of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multi-function dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank, and cleans and dry its mop pads.

The smart robot utilizes LIDAR and structured lighting to create floorplans and identify obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its top competitors. It also has a camera mounted on the front for real-time detection of hazards, although this wasn't quite foolproof in our testing and was sometimes confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum has a high maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to finish the job. It also comes with a feature known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas of the home based on how dirty these areas are.

For larger houses it's recommended to choose a model with spot or zone cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean a particular area of your house by using the app or via voice commands. A stair mode can be beneficial if you have number of furniture. iRobot RX3

The RX3 is more intelligent than its price suggests. It is a great job cleaning, removing 55% of the debris we found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It's also extremely self-sufficient, with a fully-featured application, and a self emptying base that is washable.
