The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored very well in our tests on floors that were bare and are especially adept in removing hair from dogs. However, they have a few flaws that keep them from being our top choice. For one, the Q5's navigation system does not have AI-powered obstacle avoidance which means it's susceptible to get caught up in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of a room.

It's still a good deal, especially if your office or home has a lot of unfinished floors and you want to save some money. It's also quiet and operates while you're at work or at school. The only thing it's missing that you can't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming of floors with no floor. It's also less effective in mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't stick well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle, however. If you need to mop, the mopping pad can be replaced with one that is wet in just a few minutes.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into a sleek, compact package. 3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

With a sleek circular design that appears more like a regular Roomba than the competitors' boxes this mop and robot vacuum is among the most appealing looking in our tests. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also among its most advanced. It features advanced features such as enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that can wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum to score an exemplary 10/10 in our testing due to a mix of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is easy to use. It has a simple mobile application interface, and it is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that the X40 still a loud unit. This could be a concern in the mornings prior to work or in the evening when you're trying to fall asleep.

It's also a bit expensive, though it's not as pricey as Ecovacs X2 Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are equally capable and look better. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's very capable however it's going to cost you more and create more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features that will let you get rid of your chores. Similar to Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that can take care of both mopping and vacuuming, with a multifunction dock that automatically emptys the autonomous vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank, and cleans and dry its mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of LIDAR and structured lighting to draw out floor plans and detect obstacles. It is more efficient in its navigation than its premium competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazards detection but this wasn't completely foolproof in our tests, and was often confused with power cords or obstructions.

Its vacuum has a high suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to finish the job. It also has an option known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas of the house depending on how dirty these areas are.

If you have a larger home, it's worth selecting a robot that comes with zones or spot cleaning modes. This lets you tell the robot which area of your home must be cleaned using the app or voice command. A stairway mode is useful if you own a number of furniture. For families that are busy, a recharge function and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to continue from where it left off could be very useful.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a more efficient cleaner than you'd expect from its price tag. It vacuums well, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using only one pad and a reciprocating motion that is more efficient than most of the robot vacuum that mops mop cleaners that we've tried. And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured app and an auto-emptying, washable base.

The iRobot application is designed to help you navigate a mapping run which collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map. It can be used to make cleaning schedules, plan the perfect spot for cleaning or sort out your rooms with the most dirt to improve performance. The app has a range of features, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.
