For one, the Q5's navigation doesn't include AI-powered obstacle avoidance which means it's susceptible to become entangled in shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate tightly packed rooms very efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera to see around corners.

It's still a great option, especially if you want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot and have a mostly unfinished home or office. Additionally, it's quiet and can be used while you're at work or at school. The only thing it's missing that you can't find in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It's also less effective in mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes that don't hold on for long and don't take on dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying dock, though. And, if you need to, you can swap the mopping pad for dry ones in just a few seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into an elegant, compact package. Its intelligent cleaning maps as well as nimble navigation make it easy to clean, and efficient in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also comes with a powerful suction and self-emptying bin. It's the best robotic hoover for carpets, however it's not as good as other hoovers in terms of deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mop uses sensor technology that can keep away from obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the layout of your home over time to ensure cleaner and more efficient cleaning. It's a little more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however it offers superior suction, a dustbin on board that automatically empties into its base, and supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after it vacuums, a feature that hasn't been seen in other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

With a sleek circular design that looks more like a normal Roomba than the competitors' compact models this mop and robot vacuum is one of the most attractive designs in our reviews. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also among its most advanced. It features advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads on its own).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop that has an exemplary 10/10 in our testing thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors, which include a camera, structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot hoover and mop we tested that is fully autonomously refill and empty its base station, and boasts an its own self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is simple to use. It comes with an intuitive mobile application interface, and it integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only issue is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This could be a concern in the mornings before work, or during the night when you are trying to fall asleep.

It's also quite expensive however, not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally impressive and attractive. It's a dual-purpose vacuum that's extremely powerful however, it's going to cost you more and make more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with many advanced features that let you forget about your chores. Similar to Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take care of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multi-function dock that automatically empty the vacuum's trash bin, refills its water tank, washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot uses the combination of LIDAR and structured light to map out floor plans and spot obstacles, navigating more intelligently than its more expensive competitors. It also has a front-mounted camera to detect hazards in real-time but this was not foolproof in our testing and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum has a high maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also has an option called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas in the home based on how dirty these areas are.

If you have a bigger home, it's worth selecting a robot that comes with spot or zone cleaning mode. This lets you instruct the robot on which part of your home must be cleaned by using the app or voice control. A stair mode can be useful if you own a number of furniture. For families that are busy, a recharge function and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to resume where it left off can be very useful.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you might expect from its price tag. It is a great job vacuuming, removing 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using only one pad and a reciprocating motion that cleans better that most of the mop cleaners with robots that we've examined. It's also self-sufficient, with a full-featured app and a self-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or to organize the spot-cleaning. You can also use it to prioritize your dirtiest areas for greater efficiency. The app also gives access to many features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.

Its shape is more rectangular than other robot vacuums, meaning it can reach corners and under furniture more easily. It is equipped with a powerful 8000 Pascal suction as well as intelligent combs to remove pet hair. You can also set up a spot-clean that will thoroughly clean the area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker more affordable alternative to iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras look like cute eyes. It is capable of vacuuming, but is more prone to getting caught on low thresholds and is a bit noisier than the other top robotic vacuums we've tested. It also has a less user-friendly app and a tiny base station that can't be used as an emptying bin.
